Traditional small corner pub in the Bedford Place heart of the Southampton Student Triangle. Two rooms. Walk through the front room to the slightly larger back room. Six casks available. Advertises that it does food (pies) on Thursdays and match days, though reviews indicate it does food all week - perhaps I misread the sign, but there were no menus out.
New owner took over in April, buying it for £600,000, and saying he doesn't want to change anything, and isn't going to run it himself. Was very quiet on my afternoon visit, but apparently does get busy and loud in the evenings. This was a pub in 1861, when it was run by a brewer and his wife.

Pleasant enough place. Very pleasant and welcoming barmaid. I liked it, and can see myself coming back to check out the local beers, though there was something missing that I couldn't quite put my finger on. There was a lack of warmth, character and atmosphere, though that could be because the place was so quiet. Would be worth visiting when it's a bit busier to get a real feel for the place.

The Cricketers Arms (or The Famous Cricketers Arms, as its seems to be called now) is a traditional pub in the centre of the trendy student night area of Bedford Square. The two rooms have been knocked through, so you enter into the lounge area, then go through into the old public bar to be served. The rugby was on the TV, and some lads were playing darts, so it had a sports bar feel, but there was an attractive selection of beers. I kind of like the Cricketers as part of a crawl.
We had Marston’s 61 Deep and Jennings Pigs Might Fly, another Marston's beer. Neither were very exciting.

Visited as part of Lads Who Lunch. This is the first time I've eaten at The Cricketers, and I wasn't hugely impressed. The menu wasn't exciting, though did offer fish cakes and salad. The salad was more of a dressing, than a proper accompaniment. I doubt if the cook thinks anyone actually bothers to eat the salad. The fish cake was potentially tasty, but had been left too cook for so long I needed a chain saw to get through the crust. I did mention it to the waitress, though somehow I doubt if the cook cared. Lack of care was all over the food.
Very little to offer on the beer front, as most pumps had been taken over with cider "for the summer". We both settled on Steam Town's Reefer. and we were both disappointed. Served a little warm, and certainly very tired.
All in all not a great experience. But put it down to a poor day. Overall the Cricketers is an OK if not very exciting pub.
